Update: 19 April 2010:
"Texan-1" Flies to 5,369' AGL at Huntsville
Passengers Survive!!!!
We just returned from our trip to Huntsville, and we're exhausted! A brief update, because it will be a couple of days before the video arrives (it's coming back to NHS with Jack and Suzy, who drove) and we can download the video, edit it, and upload it to the web.
Basically, we arrived in Huntsville on Wednesday, 14 April. Got our creds and the schedule that night, and hav been on-the-go ever since. Tours of the Marshall Space Flight Center all dayThursday and on Friday morning - the MSFC Rocket Fair Friday lunch time, where all of us displayed our rockets and presented the projects to Marshall and Redstone Arsenal employees - a short time at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Friday afternoon. The colleges and universities (and one high school) flew on Saturday - the rest of the high schools flew on Sunday. After an aborted attempt (a broken wire in an ejection charge), we finally launched on the second setup, flew to 5,369 feet AGL, and were promptly introuced to the "rocket eating trees" of Northern Alabama. We were able to retrieve our rocket with no damage, another high school team's rocket, and the rocket from Iowa State U as well.
More later, but until then you can view the archived webcast from NASA-TV on UStream:
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/6279762
start at about :36 minutes into the webcast and you'll catch us heading out to the pad, the launch, and the tree-landing.
We'll be back with more details as soon as we can.

Update: 21 February 2010: Live video system tested! Our SLI rocket will be carrying a live video downlink system to allow us to view the action fro the rocket's point of view, as well as two video cameras inside the payload, recording the action from the Ladybug's points of view. We flew the Boostervision system taped onto the side of a smaller rocket at the DARS launch in Frisco.

Northwest High School is proud to announce that it's proposal to participate in the 2009-2010 NASA Student Launch Initiative (NASA-SLI) program has been accepted by the program sponsors at the Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, Alabama. Northwest High School joins a select group of high schools from around the United States in this unique educational opportunity.
Northwest High School qualified to make a proposal to the SLI program by finishing in the Top 20 of the teams from across the USA in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) national finals, held in Manassas, Virginia, in May 2009. But, that was just the school's entry ticket to the party.
NASA released a "Statement of Work" and requested proposals from all of the eligible schools in August, 2009. Click here to see the original NASA request.
Northwest High School recruited students from many different areas of study, including students in the Advanced Placement Physics program, as well as the Engineering program, to join together to make the proposal to NASA. Click here to see our student staff.
The students are led by two NHS teachers: Wayne Day, who teaches Engineering and Multimedia and is also the TARC , and Thomas Tubbs, who teaches AP Physics. The team also is advised by two experienced rocketeers from the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS): Jack and Suzy Sprague, who mentor both the SLI team and the TARC teams at Northwest.
On October 1, 2009, the Northwest NASA-SLI Team forwarded its propsal to the Marshall Space Flight Center for review. Click HERE for a PDF copy of the proposal that NHS submitted.
On October 22, NHS was notified that the school's proposal was accepted. And now the work begins in earnest...
Here's the current TIMELINE for the project.
Stay tuned for more about Northwest's NASA SLI Team as this site remains: Under Construction!
